Crazy things happen, but to be pinged by a submarine’s sonar while scuba diving certainly ranks as a completely unexpected occurrence.
The video below records the reaction of a group of divers that were shocked ( not literally) by a submarine’s sonar. A submarine’s sonar is very loud and can be literally felt in your body.
The idea of being pinged by a submarine is actually something that never occurred to me. So, I did a little digging and found out that these pings can be potentially deadly for divers as well as marine life.
A submarine’s sonar is said to travel at nearly full blast , retaining an intensity of 140 decibels) for as far as about 300 miles.
Sounds a bit far-fetched, but according to a huffpost.com article, the US Navy’s 235 Db sonar results in unbearable pinging. They go on to say that at 200 Db, the vibrations can rupture your lungs and above 210 Db they can cause brain hemorrhaging. Read more here on huffpost.com
